"Welcome to My District:" Expat volunteers launch guided walks

Feeling at home in a new city means more than just finding an apartment and starting a job. It’s about discovering your favourite local spots, understanding the neighbourhood’s rhythm and building meaningful social connections.

To help newly arrived (or not-so-newly arrived!) internationals smoothly transition into local life, the Brno Expat Centre is officially launching its new volunteer-led project, Welcome to My District.

Rather than navigating a sterile map, newcomers can join guided walks led by seasoned expat volunteers who have lived in Brno for years.

Come discover Brno through the eyes of the people who live here.

Our local guides will take you around their own neighbourhoods and share the places that make everyday life easier, warmer, and more personal — from favourite bakeries and cosy libraries to useful pharmacies, post offices, gyms, quiet parks, and other neighbourhood essentials.

Along the way, they’ll add a little local history and personal context, making the walks just as interesting for long-term Brno residents who want to see familiar parts of the city in a new way.

The first neighbourhood walks have been created together with volunteers who chose the districts they know best and helped shape each route. They will premiere this June.

June line-up:

  • Královo Pole (June 6, 10:00) – Led by Eglė, an IT professional and 13-year Brno patriot from Lithuania who loves reading and people-watching at Slovanské náměstí. Book here >>
  • Veveří (June 13, 14:00) – A tour of the lively academic district by Jarmila.
  • Old Brno (Staré Brno) (June 16, 18:00) – Guided by Frank from the Netherlands, a soft-skills trainer and city project coordinator who has called Brno home since 1995 and loves the district’s proximity to Špilberk park. Book here >>
  • Lužánky (June 20, 10:00) – Led by Karen and Tim, an American couple living in Brno for seven years who enjoy marvelling at the stunning architecture surrounding Brno’s “Central Park.” Book here >>

Whether you are a newcomer looking to plant roots or a seasoned resident wanting to see the city through fresh eyes, these walks offer the perfect blend of practical exploration and community connection.
