New visa codes in 2026: what that means for expats in Brno
Newly issued biometric residence cards now feature new three-digit numerical codes.
The Department for Asylum and Migration Policy (OAMP) has introduced an update effective 1 June 2026, to simplify procedures for both expats and employers. The new codes clearly indicate your purpose of stay and your specific rights on the Czech labour market.
Student visas and other permits are also affected
This update does not only apply to workers. The expansion of numeric codes also directly affects:
- Student employee cards
- Long-term visas for studies
- Long-term residence permits for studies
- Visas and permits for other educational activities
No need to visit OAMP or exchange your card
If you currently live in Brno with a valid permit issued before 1 June 2026, nothing changes for you right now.
- No mandatory exchange: your current card remains fully valid until its expiration date.
- Do not visit the office: you do not need to go to the Brno OAMP office (Tuřanka) for this. You cannot request a replacement card just for this change.
- Automatic update: you will automatically get the new code during your next standard residence extension.
Overview of the new employee codes
The new codes allow employers in Brno to instantly verify your employment status:
- Code 271 – Dual Employee Card: tied to one specific, approved job position with a specific employer.
- Code 272 – Free Access to the Labour Market: for foreigners who can work anywhere (e.g. graduates from Czech universities).
- Code 273 – Card Without Ministry Consent: used for specific cases like selected international agreements.
