Municipal elections: a manual for expats

Elections to the municipal councils take place on the 5th and 6th of October, 2018. EU citizens with temporary or permanent residence card can participate in the municipal elections. Both actively and passively – they can vote and they can be elected.

Citizens of EU member states have the right to vote in the municipal elections at the place of their residency if they have reached the age of 18 and have been registered for permanent or temporary residence status in the territory of the Czech Republic.

Besides having the residence card, you need to be included in the electoral register at the relevant municipal office not later than 48 hours prior to the elections – i.e. 3rd October, 2 pm. To register, you need to visit your town hall and hand in an application form (download here).

The registration in the electorate register in Brno can be done through your local municipal office, according to the address on your residence card. For instance, in Brno střed – the city centre – this is at Dominikanská 2 at the office of Informatics with Mrs. Prokopová.

For other city districts, you can find the contacts here. The same office will let you know where the polling station is and will issue ballot papers to you or you pick them up at the polling station on the election day.,

Another option is to visit our office on Tuesday, 25 September and register for the electorate with our help. More info on the event page.

A note for those EU citizens who still haven’t had their temporary residence card issued: it takes the office about a month to do so. If you want to make sure you are eligible to vote in time for the elections, visit the MOI office no later than the middle of August.
