Brno Pedals Forward

Brno is making significant strides in its commitment to sustainable urban transportation.

The city’s investment in bike-sharing has transformed it into a more bike-friendly place. We still have a way to go to compare to bikers’ heaven like Copenhagen or Amsterdam, but the City aims to bring us closer to their ranks.

A Network Built for Cyclists

With the arrival of Rekola, Bolt and Nextbike, the bike-sharing network expanded, utilizing various public spaces for docking. Over the past four years, Brno has meticulously built a network of bike stands and designated parking areas. Today, bike-sharing providers operate exclusively within these designated spots, ensuring a more organized and user-friendly experience.

In 2022, the city launched a pilot project offering users free rides, a program unmatched in the Czech Republic. This initiative not only encouraged the greater use of shared bikes but also provided valuable data on user habits.

The success of the pilot program led to continued support, with contracts in place until 2026. These agreements guarantee a minimum of 690 shared bikes and maintain the popular free ride program from March to November.

Brno Bike-Sharing: Surprising Stats from 2024

Source: storymaps.arcgis.com

The Ride Champion: One dedicated cyclist managed over 1,300 rides in a single season! Talk about getting your money’s worth.

The Uphill Struggle: Stations on hills, like náměstí Míru, saw far more bike pickups than drop-offs. Apparently, everyone loves a downhill ride, but less so the climb back up!

Beyond the Expected: While most rides are short, some users took epic journeys. The longest recorded trip took a rider from the shopping center Olympia all the way to the Brno Dam.
