General info

Organising a public event in Brno is a rewarding way to bring the community together. However, like any city, it comes with a checklist of administrative steps to ensure everything is safe, legal, and professional.

This guide walks you through the process—from picking the right spot to getting the necessary permits.

They did it! The picture is from Afrofest (2025), a festival organised by Brno expats and funded partly by Brno’s cultural grant. We can connect you with the organisers.

1) Choose Your Venue

Depending on your event’s scale and vibe, you have several options:

  • Public Squares & Streets: Brno’s historic centre (Brno-střed) offers iconic spots like Zelný trh, náměstí Svobody, and Moravské náměstí.
  • Parks: For a greener setting, consider Park Lužánky, Moravské náměstí, Denisovy sady, or Špilberk. Note that events in these specific parks require prior consent from the Public Greenery of the City of Brno (Veřejná zeleň města Brna).
  • Special Cultural Locations (Plug & Play): The city’s Plug & Play initiative offers 16 pre-vetted locations (like Římské náměstí or the Janáček Theatre piazza) with simplified online booking for small cultural and community events.
  • Indoor Spaces: If you prefer a roof over your head, TIC BRNO rents out unique historic halls (like the Old Town Hall or the Water Tanks at Žlutý kopec), the KUMST creative hub offers modern workshop rooms and a hall for meetups and you can explore many further possibilities located throughout the city in this map. You can also choose to cooperate with some local organisation which has its own premises.

2) Legal Obligations & Permits

If your event is in a public space, you must navigate “Special Use of Communication” (Zvláštní užívání komunikace) and “Public Space Fees.”

A) Reporting the Event

Any public cultural or sporting event must be reported to the relevant District Office (Úřad městské části) at least 5 working days in advance.

B) The “Zábor” (Occupation Permit)

If you are placing anything on the ground (stalls, stages, speakers, or even a small table), you need a permit for the “Special Use of Communication” – usually via a form from the respective city district townhall.

  • Deadline: Apply at least 30 days before the event (60 days for complex setups).
  • Required Documents: A site plan (simple drawing), consent from the road manager (Brněnské komunikace or BKOM) if it concerns a road or pavement, and potentially a noise study if you have loud music.
  • Administrative Fee: Usually 100 CZK (for events under 10 days) to 500 CZK.

C) Local Fee for Using Public Space

Brno-střed charges a fee based on the square metres occupied and the duration.

  • Standard Rate: 5 CZK per m² per day for cultural/sporting events (10 CZK for commercial/promotional events).
  • Exemptions: Events where all proceeds go to charity are usually exempt.

3) Practicalities: Electricity & Noise

  • Power: If you need electricity in a square, you must coordinate with the owner of the distribution point (often TIC BRNO or the local District townhall).
  • Noise & Night Rest: Standard “Night Rest” (noční klid) starts at 10:00 PM. If your event needs to go later, you must request an exception from the City Assembly (Zastupitelstvo) months in advance.
  • Waste: You are responsible for cleaning the area immediately after the event. For larger events, you must contract a waste management company – in Brno, you can request SAKO Brno or AVE.

4) Promotion & Support

Don’t let your hard work go unnoticed!
