- What to do in case of emergency?
Day or night, in case of serious emergencies (that may be life-threatening) you should call 112 (European emergency number, the operators speak English). An ambulance will be sent with medical support; you will be examined on the spot, treated or, if necessary, taken to the hospital.
If you are having an injury or illness that is too serious to be dealt with by your general practitioner the next morning but not serious enough to call for an ambulance, you require what Czechs define as “urgent care”. In such situations, if you cannot go to your registered GP, the place to go to is the Trauma Hospital of Brno (“Úrazová nemocnice”, Ponávka 6, tel. 545 538 111), located near the centre of the city. The Trauma Hospital has urgent care facilities for both medical and dental problems.
During normal working hours (weekdays from 7:00 to 17:00), you should first go to your GP if you require urgent care. At other times – Monday to Friday 17:00 to 7:00 and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays at all times, you should make your own way to the hospital.
- My child is injured/sick. Where should I go?
In the case of children and young people (up to the age of 18) that are in need of urgent care, you should turn to the Children’s Hospital at Černopolní 9. Urgent care services are available from 15:30 to 7:00 on weekdays and round the clock on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
- Do I have to pay for medical services?
Visits to your doctor are covered by your insurance policy. If you need to visit a specialist, your GP will arrange for this (you first need to see your GP to get ‘an invitation’ to see a specialist); the financial arrangements are the same as in the case of treatment by your GP.
If you are insured with an insurance company (international one) which does not have an office in the Czech Republic, then you have to pay the doctor in cash, s/he will give you a bill and your insurance company will give you the money back based on the bills. This procedure is not common in the Czech Republic and most doctors are not used to it. However, you will be most likely be successful if you go to a private doctor. They should be used to it, or at least they are able to provide you with a bill for the service.

Available medical care and a clear understanding of the health care system in a new country are among the key necessities when settling down abroad. The overall level of medical services in the Czech Republic is high.f

Finding a doctor
First of all, contact your insurance company and ask for assistance with finding a doctor. The insurance company is obliged to find a general doctor, pediatrician, dentist etc. who has an agreement with your insurance company.

At the doctors
There are indeed many doctors who speak English (but you have to be patient with them, not all of them speak fluently). Nevertheless, the nurses often do not speak English. When you go to visit a doctor or a hospital, the nurse is the first person you have to speak with. For this reason, here is a short list of phrases which can be helpful.

In case of urgent medical need:
Should you immediately need services of a GP without being registered at any (you are feeling sick, you need pills and a sick note), you can go to the Trauma Hospital (Address: Ponávka 6) and ask for a GP’s check-up there. They are available 24/7, except between 3 and 5 PM. However, you will need to be ready to wait maybe for hours before they admit you.
For a fast ambulance and immediate admission to the hospital (in serious cases only), call 112.
Search engines
You can also try to use services of popular Czech database Známý lékař. You have to be registered, but it also contains a contact to various GPs, including ratings and comments from patients.
Paid Service
If you want to make the process of searching for a GP easier for yourself and you don’t mind paying for it, you can contact the Canadian Medical clinic and prepay the membership for English speaking service, in house doctors, help line etc. The membership fee is for the English friendly reception, the actual medical care is then covered from your health insurance.
Telemedicine
When in need of medical consultation, before searching for a doctor, you may take advantage of online doctors, who can answer your questions, suggest medication, and recommend a specialist.
www.ulekare.cz (in Czech only) is a website and an app for consulting a doctor and for making an appointment with a doctor. Consulting is available for single payment, however, the doc appointment only as part of employee benefit membership (talk to your employer ;). Clients of OZP and PVZP insurance companies can use the service as a benefit.
www.meddi.com/cz/en is an app (in English) for consulting a doctor via call, chat or video call. Medicine prescription, and appointment with GP or paediatrician is possible for an extra fee.
