In February, we invite you to experience two juxtaposed places which nonetheless both have to do with art or design, albeit from different angles: the Moravian Gallery at Husova street – Museums of Modern and Decorative Arts, and the 10-Z Bunker.
The gallery premises are located in beautiful Neo-Renaissance buildings. We are going to visit expositions of Contemporary art and of Design and fashion. A Coffee break at Robot Café is a must – there’s a special surprise.
A visit of the 10-Z Bunker inside the Špilberk hill across the street follows for those interested. 10-Z is the code name of the most secret Brno shelter from the communist era (1959) for political representatives of the city and the region. It was built during the Nazi era as a Luftschutz shelter against the American and Soviet bombing of Brno. In 1946 to 1948, it was home to a successful wholesale winery named Löwy and Šmíd, but the Communists confiscated from its owners just two days after their February putsch. Inside this nuclear fallout shelter, resistant to weapons of mass destruction, a total of 500 people could be housed for three days. Under Czech army control until 1993, it had been classified top secret.
Now it’s run by the AMERFO public benefit society. The main purpose of the project is to make the former military area a meeting place and to make it accessible to the public. It is now used as a museum, café and hostel in the form of a social enterprise.
