A beautiful October day – sunny skies, crisp, clear autumn air, the leaves turning colour … What
better time to visit Brno’s Central Cemetery?
Opened in 1883, it was designed as monumental municipal park, with ornamental walls, avenues
of stately trees and masses of flowers and foliage. Today, it offers refuge from the hustle and
bustle of the city and a unique glimpse into the history of Brno itself. Germans and Czechs,
Scots, English, Greeks, Roma, Vietnamese – they’re all here. Some of the inhabitants of this
ghost city are world-famous, others were key figures in the development of the Czech nation and
of modern Brno. They include entrepreneurs, public figures in the Czech National Revival,
scientists and scholars, artists, composers, writers, architects and many more. Their monuments
and gravestones, many quite opulent, reflect the changing fashions over the past century and a
quarter, making the cemetery itself a vast outdoor museum and art gallery. So much bundled into
two hours!
Meeting place: Central Cemetery, entrance on Vídeňská street (tram lines no. 2 and 5)
