The run-up to Christmas is always busy and packed with all manner of events. So here at the Brno Expat Centre, we were a little uncertain as to what the response would be to our invitation to attend a pre Christmas held very close to Christmas, on 13 December.
In the event, our worries were unfounded: almost forty people showed up, a wonderful mixture of expats (the majority) and Czechs, newcomers to Brno and those who’ve lived here for many years. Most were employees of various international firms in Brno, but there were also teachers from the International School Brno and individuals from other local firms, some who are self-employed – a true cross-section of the expat community and Czechs involved with expats and interested in making their lives here more enjoyable.
It was an informal evening, with just a few introductory words from Marie Zezůlková, head of the City of Brno’s Office for Strategy, and Roman Tesař, Managing Director of GTS/Lufthansa, one of the firms linked to the BEC. Most important was the opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones and enjoy the excellent buffet.
For many, the highlight of the evening came with the chance to sing Christmas carols to the guitar accompaniment of Richard Lank, a member of the Brnopolis Board. First came “O Come All Ye Faithful” (“Adeste Fideles”) in English, and then in Czech one of the most popular local carols, “Půjdem spolu do Betlému”. Everyone, Czechs and expats, then joined in for the rousing final, a specially translated English version of the Czech carol – “Let us go now unto Bethl’em”.
